Creative Learning Center is a ministry of Second Baptist Church.
CLC seeks to glorify God through teaching, loving, and supporting young children and their families. We believe that each child is a unique creation of God, and our CLC staff members want to partner with parents to help children grow in every area of development. We strive for excellence in all that we do, and it is our desire to provide an exceptional experience for all staff, children, and families at CLC.
Preschool
We believe that experiences in the first 5 years become the building blocks for school readiness – both from a skills perspective, as well as positive relationships with adults and peers. We also believe that children learn best through developmentally appropriate activities and play. Our teachers are trained to use a curriculum called STREAMin3 that was developed by the University of Virginia’s Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning. STREAMin3 is an engaging, interactions-based curriculum for children ages birth through five, grounded in developmentally appropriate practice and early education research. STREAMin3 focuses on five Core Skills (Relate, Regulate, Think, Communicate, and Move) and six STREAM Skills (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math) to promote children’s development and early learning. As teachers observe children in the classroom, they tailor the curriculum to meet each child’s individual needs.
CLC Preschool follows a school-year schedule, beginning mid August and ending in late May. In addition, we offer a theme-based camp experience during the summer for children 12 months through entering Kindergarten.
We offer the following enrollment options:
- Morning Preschool 9:00 am – 12:00 noon
- Full-Day Preschool 7:45 am – 5:30 pm
Classes Available (based on the child’s age by September 30)

CLC Preschool is participating in Virginia’s Quality Measurement and Improvement System (Virginia Quality Birth to 5) through the Virginia Department of Education.
Kindergarten
CLC prides itself in providing excellent instruction and care for children in our program, and our Kindergarten class is no exception. CLC is able to offer smaller class sizes, which allows for more individualized instruction, as compared to other school settings. CLC provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the Virginia Standards of Learning as well as opportunities for socialization through peer interaction.
This class is designed for children who are ready for Kindergarten curriculum. We utilize a balanced approach for teaching Reading/Phonics through Sounds to Spelling curriculum. In Math, we use Math Their Way for number sense through whole group and small group instruction as well as providing hands-on opportunities. Science and Social Studies are taught using a thematic literature-based approach. We utilize Handwriting Without Tears in our Kindergarten classroom to support fine motor development and handwriting. Children receive report cards and assessments similar to the ones used for Kindergarten in Henrico County Public Schools every 9 weeks.
There are two enrollment options for our Kindergarten class.
- The Kindergarten day is 8:00 am – 2:00 pm Monday through Friday, with drop off beginning at 7:30 am.
- There is also a full-day option which is 7:30 am – 5:30 pm.
CLC Kindergarten follows a school-year schedule, beginning mid August and ending in late May. We also offer a theme-based camp experience during the summer.

CLC After School serves children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. A typical afternoon includes time for snack, homework, reading, recreation, and enrichment activities!
