Welcome to

Welcome to Second Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia!

We focus on the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ. We practice vibrant worship, deep discipleship, warm fellowship, and multi-faceted mission work. We uphold Baptist principles of biblical authority, believer’s baptism, the priesthood of all believers, local church autonomy, and religious freedom for all. We affiliate with Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). We welcome all people to join us as we walk with God in the way of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit!

Holy Week & Easter

Holy Week is the sacred time in the Christian calendar that commemorates the final days of Jesus’ life. From his triumphant entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion and resurrection. We invite you to join us for a series of special events as we reflect, remember, and celebrate together.

Need Prayer?

There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective toward the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you’re facing, we’d love to pray with you!

Advent & Christmas at 2BC

Advent is a sacred season for reflection and anticipation during which we remember the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

We invite you to join us as we journey through this special season.

Worship at the River

Join us for “Worship at the River” at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9.

We plan to have several baptisms in the James River at this special outdoor service, which will also include scriptures, prayers, and music. Please bring your own chair. All are encouraged to attend!

Blessing of the Backpacks

On Sunday, August 23, children and students of all ages are invited to participate in our annual tradition, “Blessing of the Backpacks.”

During both The Well and The Sanctuary services, there will be a special time for the children and students to come forward with their backpacks and receive a blessing for the new school year. They will also receive a tag to keep on their backpacks, reminding them that God made them to love God and others, to grow together in faith, and to shine God’s light every day.

Second Baptist Church School of Preaching

The Second Baptist Church School of Preaching launched in early 2026 as a ministry to equip both laypersons and ordained ministers to preach the gospel with mind and spirit, precision and passion, insight and power.

Led by pastor and preaching scholar Dr. Noel Schoonmaker, the School of Preaching offers free in-person preaching courses at Second Baptist Church, 9614 River Road, Richmond, Virginia.

All are invited to join us in the fall of 2026 for a new course entitled Preaching 201: “Texts, Contexts, and Theories of Preaching.”

From September 9 through December 9, the class will convene each Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Room 246 (please note that class will not meet on Oct 28 or Nov 25). Opportunities to preach a sermon in class are available but not mandatory. Many attend simply to audit and learn.

No registration for the course is necessary, and there are no required books or assignments. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact us at info@secondbaptistrva.org or 804-740-7101.

A New Home for Sacred Beauty: Our Hallway Becomes an Art Gallery

Our main hallway is undergoing a transformation into a dedicated art gallery this summer, featuring The Testaments, an abstract expressionist series created by our wonderfully talented church member, Ken Walker.

Sacred art invites us into worship rather than distracting from it. Abstract expressionism leaves room for the Spirit to meet each viewer personally, turning a hallway into a place of quiet reflection. Displaying sacred art creates space for encounter, prayer, and gratitude.

What’s changing:

  • New wall coverings and track lighting to highlight the artwork
  • A rotating exhibit space for sacred art from our church, community, and beyond
  • Current hallway decor and furnishings lovingly relocated to the heritage display case hallway outside the main conference room
