Dear Church Family,
We are encouraged by the CDC’s recent announcement that fully vaccinated persons are no longer advised to wear masks outdoors or indoors in most situations. We are also encouraged that Virginia’s mask mandate has been lifted for fully vaccinated persons. This is wonderful news in the long arc of the pandemic!
Like other churches and organizations, we at Second Baptist Church are in the process of discerning what these developments mean for us. We are planning an extended staff meeting next week and a meeting with our COVID-19 Response Team to discuss the next steps for our congregation. In the meantime, we want you to know our plans for this Sunday, May 16.
This Sunday, May 16, both The Well and The Sanctuary Service will be mask-optional services. Masks will not be required, but they will be welcome. We will maintain socially distanced seating but welcome congregational singing in each service.
From the outset of the pandemic, we have emphasized Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 22:39: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” We have sought to operate with love for others, both in the church and in the broader community. As we continue to move forward, let us honor Christ by making neighbor-love our goal. For example, some will wear a mask to church this Sunday while others will not. Some may be ready to resume close contact, while others may be hesitant. Let us love one another, respecting one another’s personal choices, “making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).
We will continue to livestream our services as well. This Sunday, we plan to livestream The Well at 9:00 a.m. here and The Sanctuary Service at 11:30 a.m. here. You can find an order of service for The Well here and for The Sanctuary Service here, as well as children’s materials here, so that you can worship along with us interactively.
