2020 Vision Priority: Life Transformation

We are Christ-centered servants, who practice spiritual disciplines, share our faith, build our lives upon Biblical truth, and connect deeply with other believers.

To develop the ministry areas of Bible Studies, Connect, Prayer, Communication and Events in order to be a loving community that sharpens, challenges and loves one another and God more whole-heartedly.

“My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2-3

Creates opportunities for women to join together for fellowship, worship, discipleship, prayer and service.

Second Baptist Church hosts two programs to meet the needs of all moms with young children (birth through pre-k) in our community. Morning MOPS meets on alternating Friday mornings while MOPS@Night meets on alternating Thursday nights. For more information about Morning MOPS please contact Meredith Mawyer at meredithmawyer@gmail.com or Tara Tench for night MOPS at telacy15@hotmail.com. You can also find us on Facebook – Day MOPSNight MOPS!

MOPS isn’t a playgroup. It’s a place to connect.

It’s a place of encouragement – where moms rally around each other realizing none of us really have this figured out but we are better together.

It’s a place of friendship – where all the exhaustion of the phrase “no one napped today” is understood and the joy of a “clean plate dinner” is shared.

It’s a place of rest – where sweet ladies love on our kids for two hours while we eat with two hands and finish a sentence.

But most of all…it’s a place to connect with other moms as we try to realize our potential in this role we have been called to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are there any events outside of your regular meeting schedule?

A: Yes. We have Mom’s Nights Out as a large group and with each table.  We may also schedule playdates throughout the year to encourage friendship and fellowship.

Q: What do my membership dues include?

A: General membership dues are $100 ($50 fall/$50 spring). This covers the cost of all activities provided at regular meetings and membership to MOPS International. The remainder of membership fees is used to obtain speakers, buy craft supplies, and cover other program costs. We do have scholarships available if needed.

Q: What if I do not need childcare for my preschoolers during the meetings?

A: Not all MOPS mothers have their children enrolled in MOPPETS childcare. It is not a requirement to have your children enrolled; however, membership fees remain the same regardless of the number of children enrolled. If your child is attending our MOPPETS program, you must register them at www.kidcheck.com before they can come please!

Q: How do I join?

A:  A registration form is just above this FAQ dropdown. For the safety of the children and workers, our MOPPETS rooms must maintain appropriate worker/child ratios. Once registration capacities for each room have been met, we will begin a waiting list. It is required to register with MOPS International at the following page: self register for Membership at www.mops.org/join.

**the code for DAY MOPS is: BEWV
**the code for NIGHT MOPS is: QRB4

Q: Do we have to participate in fundraisers to be a part of MOPS?

A: No. There is no requirement for either participation in fundraisers or service projects to join or maintain your membership in MOPS. While we do provide opportunities for service, our main goal as a group is encouragement, fellowship, and friendship for our fellow moms.

Q: I’m new to the area and don’t know anyone. How will MOPS benefit me?

A: Joining one of our programs is a great way to get adjusted to your new home and meet new people! It provides a welcoming and fun environment to meet other moms with children the same age as your own. When you join MOPS you will be assigned to a table of 6-8 moms. This will introduce you to a small group of moms whom you will get to know throughout the year. Your child will also benefit from the Christian-based curriculum of our MOPPETS program while getting some fun time to play with other children and giving mommy some necessary adult time!

Q: What if I would like to join a MOPS group but I cannot meet on Thursday nights or Friday mornings?

A: Go to mops.org to search the national MOPS directory to find other local MOPS groups that may meet at a more convenient time to suit your schedule. Getting connected with other moms is a big part of helping you deal with the wonderful but sometimes trying years of mothering! We hope that you find a group that can be an encouragement to you!

Q: When are your meetings?

A: We have two groups: morning and night

Morning MOPS meets on the 1st & 3rd Fridays of every month (see calendar for specific dates). Meetings begin with brunch at 9:30am and end at 11:30am. Childcare is provided from 9:20 until 11:30.

MOPS@Night meets on the Thursday night before the Morning MOPS meetings from 7:00-9:00pm.  Childcare is provided upon request.

Q: What am I supposed to do with my other Friday mornings?

A: We offer a Bible study for young moms on the Fridays that MOPS does not meet (see calendar above). Childcare is provided.

Q: Where do you meet?

A: Meetings are held in the Children’s Ministry Building located at Second Baptist Church at 9614 River Road, Richmond, VA 23229.

Q: What goes on at a typical meeting?

A: Meetings rotate between guest speakers, crafts, and mentoring from moms who have been through the preschool stage. Speakers range from a variety of topics but always concern a subject related to this stage of motherhood. Crafts are a great way to get creative and enjoy fellowship.

Each meeting includes time for delicious food and table discussion.

MOPS 2017-18 “Free Indeed”

In order to unfold our wings this year, we will…

Let Love Be the Loudest Voice

Proclaim Favor

Sometimes, especially as moms with young kids, life can sneak up on us, and we don’t realize that we have gotten stuck. Stuck in patterns of thinking or habits that are holding us captive. This is the year that changes, this is the year we will stop settling for what simply gets us by and do the work to get to what’s best. We will examine our worry and not believe everything we feel. We will bask in the freedom of living loved by understanding who God is and who we are because of it. We will be free from the need to hustle for our worth, and we will live in the truth that we are already loved and lovable, without all the striving. We will parent with fresh perspective and treat ourselves with tenderness, because love is the loudest voice we hear, and it is proclaiming freedom and favor.

Join with other mothers as we meet the first and third Thursdays & Fridays of the month with childcare provided to make connections, grow together, and give each other encouragement on the journey of motherhood!

FLC 103, led by Dr. Sherouse

Ongoing Prayer Opportunities

Let’s emerge as women of prayer! One of the ways we love and serve each other is through prayer. Through prayer, we grow closer to God and we grow closer to each other. God has told us to be like little children and to depend on Him whole heartedly. That is not always easy when everything else tells us to depend on ourselves or others. We need encouragement from the scriptures and each other to pray as our first resort, not our last. When we do stop, engage our faith, and pray, things happen and we are changed. God shows Himself strong on our behalf and we stand in awe of Him. Join us in the ongoing prayer opportunities so we will grow and heal together in prayer.

Emerge leadership is developing and training an Emerge Prayer Team that will be available to pray with women at Emerge Events as well as offer prayer, encouragement, and a listening ear on a one-on-one basis, as needed.
