FAQ
Second Baptist Church hosts MOPS to meet the needs of all moms with young children (birth through pre-k) in our community. We meet on alternating Thursday nights. For more information, email Tara Tench at telacy15@hotmail.com. You can also find us on Facebook!

MOPS isn’t a playgroup. It’s a place to connect.

It’s a place of encouragement – where moms rally around each other realizing none of us really have this figured out but we are better together.

It’s a place of friendship – where all the exhaustion of the phrase “no one napped today” is understood and the joy of a “clean plate dinner” is shared.

It’s a place of rest – where sweet ladies love on our kids for two hours while we eat with two hands and finish a sentence.

But most of all…it’s a place to connect with other moms as we try to realize our potential in this role we have been called to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are there any events outside of your regular meeting schedule?

A: Yes. We have Mom’s Nights Out as a large group and with each table.  We may also schedule playdates throughout the year to encourage friendship and fellowship.

Q: How do I join?

A:  A registration form is just above this FAQ dropdown. It is required to register with MOPS International at the following page: self register for Membership at www.mops.org/join.
**the code for MOPS is: QRB4

Q: Do we have to participate in fundraisers to be a part of MOPS?

A: No. There is no requirement for either participation in fundraisers or service projects to join or maintain your membership in MOPS. While we do provide opportunities for service, our main goal as a group is encouragement, fellowship, and friendship for our fellow moms.

Q: I’m new to the area and don’t know anyone. How will MOPS benefit me?

A: Joining one of our programs is a great way to get adjusted to your new home and meet new people! It provides a welcoming and fun environment to meet other moms with children the same age as your own. When you join MOPS you will be assigned to a table of 6-8 moms. This will introduce you to a small group of moms whom you will get to know throughout the year.

Q: What if I would like to join a MOPS group but I cannot meet on Thursday nights?

A: Go to mops.org to search the national MOPS directory to find other local MOPS groups that may meet at a more convenient time to suit your schedule. Getting connected with other moms is a big part of helping you deal with the wonderful but sometimes trying years of mothering! We hope that you find a group that can be an encouragement to you!

Q: When are your meetings?

A: MOPS meets on the first & third Thursday night of the month from 7:00-9:00pm.  Childcare is provided upon request.

Q: Where do you meet?

A: Meetings are held in the Children’s Ministry Building located at Second Baptist Church at 9614 River Road, Richmond, VA 23229.

Q: What goes on at a typical meeting?

A: Meetings rotate between guest speakers, crafts, and mentoring from moms who have been through the preschool stage. Speakers range from a variety of topics but always concern a subject related to this stage of motherhood. Crafts are a great way to get creative and enjoy fellowship.

Each meeting includes time for delicious food and table discussion.

MOPS 2018-19 “Find Your Fire”

Never let the fire go out … When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful. Share with God’s people who are in need. Welcome others into your homes. – Romans 12:11-13 (NIrV 1998)

LIVE EXPECTANTLY: This is the bold reminder to think about what could go right. We will renew our minds and choose to trust that God is good. Hope will be on the tip of our tongues. Passion will flow from our hearts and we will pray big prayers. It takes tending to keep the fire alive, so we will fan our flame by choosing to do more things that make us forget to check our phones. We will choose to play with our kids instead of crossing one more thing off our to-do list. We will be women whose passion and patience inspire the people we love most.

SURRENDER DARINGLY: This is the bold reminder to let things go. Fire is a tool of transformation, and often the most life-improving thing we can do is surrender. Surrender is often misunderstood as an act of weakness, when in truth it is an act of courage. What would it feel like to let yourself off the hook from living like it is all up to you? Let go of unhelpful expectations and the need to control the people and situations in your life. When we surrender, we become in tune with the swift but gentle timing of God. This year, we will take a daring step into the fire of transformation, so we can emerge truer and braver than we ever imagined we could be. We will be women who trust that God is fighting for us, so we need only to be still.

BREATHE FREELY: This is the bold reminder to let yourself be loved. Even though we aren’t enough in our own mind, we are enough in the mind of God. There is nothing that you can do, or have done, to ruin or fracture God’s love for you. There is no amount of striving or performing that will earn you more. Breathe freely and joyfully, and be refreshed. We will be women and moms who stand out because we live loved.

NEW Free to Fly Women’s Prayer Team

6:20-8:00p.m. 2nd & 4th Wednesdays, led by the Emerge Prayer Team
Education Building Room 112 until October, the meeting in the Parlor

Are you stuck? Are you hurting? Are you feeling lost or empty? Are you feeling any spiritual, mental, emotional, or physical sickness? Is something holding you back in your walk with God? Do you want to grow closer in your relationship with Jesus? Do you need guidance in your life? Do you need faith to endure or persevere? Do you want to experience God’s love in a deeper way? Do you have past or present traumas that you are facing alone? Is shame oppressing you? Are you depressed or hopeless? Do you desire greater freedom?

The Emerge Prayer Team would like to love and pray for women seeking to gain greater healing and freedom in Christ in any area of their lives. We are called to walk by faith and to pray for each other (James 5:13) and to bear each other’s burdens and in that way to fulfill the law of Christ (Gal 6:2). We believe that when we pray, God hears us and that He responds (2 Chron 7:14). He is delighted when we pray. Praying opens doors for us to understand and experience God’s great love and power for those who believe (Eph 1:19).

We will take personal prayer requests and pray corporately or one-on-one if needed. The fourth Wednesday of each month, we will have a special prayer focus to help our women grow in prayer. All prayer is confidential. Please contact Jamie Mitchell at 2bcEmerge@gmail.com for questions, to refer anyone for prayer, to submit a confidential prayer request, or if you want to let us know that you are coming. Emerge and pray with us! We are here to serve you as the body of Christ, through His Spirit and in His Name.

Ongoing Prayer Opportunities

Let’s emerge as women of prayer! One of the ways we love and serve each other is through prayer. Through prayer, we grow closer to God and we grow closer to each other. God has told us to be like little children and to depend on Him whole heartedly. That is not always easy when everything else tells us to depend on ourselves or others. We need encouragement from the scriptures and each other to pray as our first resort, not our last. When we do stop, engage our faith, and pray, things happen and we are changed. God shows Himself strong on our behalf and we stand in awe of Him. Join us in the ongoing prayer opportunities so we will grow and heal together in prayer.

Emerge leadership is developing and training an Emerge Prayer Team that will be available to pray with women at Emerge Events as well as offer prayer, encouragement, and a listening ear on a one-on-one basis, as needed.
