ESL continues to serve the immigrant population of the West End of Richmond. We are often asked which group of people has the largest population and most are surprised by the answer. By far, the largest ethnic group are Brazilians, followed by Egyptians. Next come Hispanics, but as of the present time, there are few students from Mexico. Most of our Hispanic population comes from Colombia, El Salvador and Venezuela.
Many of the ESL students also attend one of the foreign language services here at Second Baptist. Valter Sorrentino, our Portuguese Minister, teaches the Citizenship Class. In the past year six of our students have become United States citizens and there are five more students enrolled in the class.
ESL’s greatest need is childcare. In order for parents to attend class, childcare is provided for children, birth through age 12. The younger children just need someone to play with them and keep them busy but some of the older children need help with homework
Any and all volunteers to help with childcare are appreciated!
